Exploring the Tanneries of Marrakesh: A Journey into Morocco’s Ancient Leather-Making Tradition
I’m in Morocco, specifically in Marrakesh, where I visited one of the oldest factories for leather production: the tanneries. This place is steeped in history and tradition, but be warned – the smell is overwhelming, comparable to what I imagine the stench of hell to be. The odor of decaying animal carcasses and the hair of freshly sheared animals is everywhere. Despite the harsh conditions, animals like dogs and cats roam the area, seemingly unfazed by the smell. I couldn’t help but wonder how they managed to endure it.
Meeting a Leather Artisan
Amidst this intense environment, I met an old man who works at the tannery. He generously offered to show me the entire leather-making process. It was fascinating to watch him work and learn about the intricate steps involved in transforming raw hides into finished leather products. Although he spoke in a mix of French and Moroccan, I could understand everything through his demonstrations.
The Leather-Making Process
The process begins with soaking the hides to remove hair and flesh. They are then treated with natural substances to soften and preserve the leather. Watching the skilled artisans meticulously work on each hide was a testament to the craftsmanship and tradition that has been passed down through generations. Despite the challenging conditions, the dedication and skill of these artisans were truly impressive.

Visiting the tanneries was an eye-opening experience, providing a glimpse into a world that many people never see. The combination of historical significance and the artisanal process made it a unique and memorable part of my trip to Marrakesh.
